"I see a lot of parallels between mushing and Multiple Sclerosis. Slowly, continuously and unpredictable physical functions decrease. Every day is a new challenge, planning difficult, fatigue a given. There were times during Iditarod I could barely stand on my feet cause I was so tired. My mother is huge a source of inspiration for me during such moments."
- Sam -
The Iditarod and the Yukon Quest are amongst the most heroic races on Earth. Both cover nearly 1,100 miles of ruthless nature in the vast land of Alaska. When Grizzlies hibernate, Northern Lights decorate the sky and days become nights, mushers try to cover this distance as fast as they can. Sixteen brave dogs and their driver are put up to the test.
In 2008 Sam finished the Iditarod with 16 dogs in harness. During races and training he noticed a lot of parallels with the challenges his mom, living with MS, has to deal with. Hence the idea was born to dedicate a new project to all people living with MS.
Last winter Sam ran the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod. He spend approximately 12 000 km's behind a dogteam, fulfilling a childhood dream and raising respect for the everyday accomplishments of people living with MS.
This winter he'll be studying and preparing himself for a new trip, AntarcticICE.
